The theft of the Mona Lisa, Louvre, 1911

The Mona Lisa

En 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia, un ouvrier italien qui avait travaillé au Louvre, se cache une nuit dans le musée. On a Monday, when it was closed, he lifted the Mona Lisa off the wall, removed it from its frame in a service stairwell and walked out with the panel under his smock. The theft was not noticed until the next day.

Pendant deux ans, le tableau reste introuvable. Peruggia le garde caché à Paris, puis tente de le vendre à un antiquaire de Florence en 1913. Il est arrêté, et le scandale transforme un portrait déjà admiré en l'œuvre la plus célèbre du monde.For two years the painting vanished. Peruggia kept it hidden in Paris, then tried to sell it to a Florence dealer in 1913. He was arrested, and the scandal turned an already-admired portrait into the most famous work of art on earth.

The Great Train Robbery, 1963

The Great Train Robbery

En août 1963, une bande d'une quinzaine d'hommes menée par Bruce Reynolds truque un signal ferroviaire pour le faire passer au rouge sur la ligne postale Glasgow-Londres. Le train s'arrête ; ils décrochent la locomotive et le premier wagon, puis forment une chaîne humaine pour faire passer les sacs postaux le long du remblai.In August 1963, a gang of around fifteen led by Bruce Reynolds rigged a railway signal to red on the Glasgow-to-London mail line. The train stopped; they uncoupled the engine and the first carriage, then formed a human chain to pass the mailbags down the embankment.

The Banco Central tunnel heist, Fortaleza, 2005

Pendant trois mois, elle creuse un tunnel d'environ quatre-vingts mètres, climatisé et éclairé, passant sous une rue puis remontant à travers un mètre de béton armé.A crew rented a house two blocks from the Banco Central in Fortaleza, Brazil, and opened a fake landscaping business as cover. For three months they dug a tunnel some eighty metres long, air-conditioned and lit, running under a street and up through a metre of reinforced concrete.

En un week-end de 2005, ils emportent environ 160 millions de reais en billets usagés, impossibles à tracer. The Hatton Garden heist, 2015

The Knightsbridge safe deposit robbery, 1987

The Société Générale sewer heist, Nice, 1976

The Nice Sewer Heist

En 1976, Albert Spaggiari conduit une équipe dans la salle des coffres de la Société Générale de Nice en passant par les égouts de la ville, creusant depuis les canalisations jusqu'à la chambre forte. Spaggiari sera arrêté, mais s'échappera en sautant par une fenêtre du bureau du juge, pour ne jamais être repris.They left with a fortune, and on a wall a line that became legend: "without weapons, without hatred and without violence." Spaggiari was caught, but escaped by leaping from a window in the judge's office, and was never recaptured.

Thomas Blood and the Crown Jewels, Tower of London, 1671

Il est rattrapé à la porte. Fait stupéfiant : le roi Charles II ne se contente pas de le gracier, il lui accorde des terres. L'audace, parfois, paie plus que la prudence.He was caught at the gate. Astonishingly, King Charles II not only pardoned him but granted him land. Sometimes audacity pays better than caution.

The switch went unnoticed until the shipment was weighed in France.
